As the seasons change, so do the beauty trends. The brains behind Beauty and Tips love to try out new things and we’re sure you do too! Last season saw clean, fresh faces and barely done hair, but this summer we’re championing some new looks.
Bold eyeshadow, noughties-eque hair and twists on classic looks are all making an appearance. In can be a bit of a pain trying to figure out what’s passé and what’s on trend, so we’ve done most of the legwork for you – all that’s left for you to do is to decide which look you want to try first! We’ve done lots of research and gathered all the info you need to look on point this year, so get reading and be prepared to experiment.
1). Loud lips
As seen on the catwalks at Jason Wu, one of our favourite looks of summer 2017 is the bold lip paired with an otherwise bare face. Fluoro reds, oranges, pinks and coral adorned models’ lips on a number of catwalks, but the rest of their face was perfectly understated and bare. This look is perfect for those days, when applying a whole face of make-up seems impossible. Just pop on a bright lipstick, a bit of mattifying face powder and you’re good to go.
2). Give your lower lids a chance
At Shiatzy Chen, models were seen rocking silver glitter liner underneath their bottom lashes. This look is a cooler twist on the more widely seen glitter liner on top that we all seemed to rock in the early 2000’s. To make like the models do, swipe a line of silver or gold pigmented eyeshadow underneath your lash line and fix with a setting spray. Keep the rest of your make-up natural and add a slick of gloss or balm to your lips to get that haute-couture look everyone craves.
3). Straighten up
No doubt most of us will remember the pin-straight hair rocked in the early noughties. You know, the kind championed by Clueless’ Cher? It may have been considered passé in recent years, when curly, tousled hair ruled, but the straight look is back with a vengeance. Worn by models at Versace with a middle parting, straight hair seems to be cool again. Tell your friends.
4). Crystal nails
Far from the tacky diamante-accents we’re used to seeing in the window of nail bars, the crystal embellishments seen at Rodarte this season were placed around the nail bed in a cool semi-circle style formation. If you want to re-create the look, choose tiny studs and place side by side very closely until all the space along the line of the nail bed it covered. A delicate but statement look – we’re head over heels for it!
5). ‘Athletic’ skin
One thing all the catwalks showing S/S17 had in common was the model’s skin. Skin was glowing, radiant and flushed – think post stroll glow rather than the ‘too much cardio’ beetroot-red look we often sport. To achieve the look at home, make sure you invest in a toner with hyaluronic acid to achieve the look naturally, or a luminizing serum to fake the look and help your make-up appear dewy, rather than caked.
6). Pop of colour
This summer, the mantra we’ve seen most across the board is ‘bolder is better’. Set aside your fail-safe muted eyeshadows in favour of bright jewel tones to tick this beauty look off your list.
(Think azure sea-blue, emerald green or onyx purple). Paint the colour on with a flat eyeshadow brush for maximum pigment application, then blend the look out just a touch with a fluffy shadow brush. If you’re feeling particularly daring, combine this look with the lower-lid accents we wrote about in number 2. You’ll be festival ready in no time.
7). Cut crease eyeshadow
A favourite beauty trend championed by YouTubers this Spring/Summer 2017 is the cut crease. “The what?!” we hear you cry. The cut crease is a technique used to apply eyeshadow in the crease of your eye, resulting in bigger and brighter looking peepers. Many make-up artists have been seen holding a spoon, bottle lid or other curved item over their eyelid to trace a definite dark line right in the crease. If you want to create the look at home, just make sure the colour on your lid is lighter than that on the crease. Voila, dramatic eyes in an instant!
8). Get glittered
This festival season, glitter is back and bigger than ever. Thanks to Instagram stars, celebrities and normal gals alike, glitter has been flying off the shelves like never before. We’ve seen glitter eyebrows, glitter collarbones, whole chest pieces adorned with jewels and foreheads completely covered in glitter patterns and designs. If you want to go above and beyond the usual glitter on one side of your face, now is the time to get creative. Apply glitter liberally over your collarbones and décolletage for an up to date look, or get super creative and add coloured gem stones along the tops of your eyebrows. The look is perfect for a festival or a cool night out with your pals.
9). Rust it up
If someone had told us a year ago that we’d be wearing red and orange hues on our eyelids, we would’ve called them crazy.
Thanks to giants like Topshop, this spring/summer 2017 we’ve been shown the light. Big brands adorned their model’s eyes with washes of rust, satsuma orange, copper and yellow this season and it actually looked kinda cool. If you fancy trying the look yourself, start by wearing it with just a flick of mascara and a clear lip balm to avoid looking like you’ve been let loose in your big sister’s make up bag.
We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about these new season beauty trends and we can’t wait to hear what you’ve tried out! Let us know in the comments
